What is Meta Trader (MT4)?

MetaTrader 4 – commonly known as MT4 – is considered to be one of the most user-friendly and reliable online forex trading platforms on the market today, offering numerous and versatile features. It is a popular choice amongst online FX trading providers.

MT4 was created by MetaQuotes Software Corp, a mid-sized software company registered in Limassol (Cyprus) but primarily based in Russia, headed by Renat Fatkhullin. The MT4 is MetaQuote’s main product and is used by numerous brokers and banks around the world. The MT4 platform was first released in July 2005 and represented a major overhaul of preceding versions, improving stability, reducing server load and making the platform more resilient to security threats.

The MT4 client terminal was created to provide trade operations and technical analysis in real time, when working with Forex, CFD and Futures. The platform can be customised to suit personal requirements and traders can use import/export indicators and historic data and place a wide range of orders, thus ensuring a flexible management of their trading activities.

The MetaTrader 4 platform is available in more than 20 languages and MetaQuotes also offers multilingual support. The platform can adapt to the requirements of individual clients trading on a single trading account as well as of asset managers simultaneously trading multiple accounts. The MT4 trading terminal can be used from any location, only requiring internet access.

MT4 is a free-of-charge program that allows traders to analyse quotes, make trades and develop strategies. It is considered to be a safe and reliable online trading platform integrating real-time quotes, advanced technical analysis, innovative automated trading, multi-currency features and access to financial news and events. An especially noteworthy feature is that while it is sophisticated enough to offer multiple investment accounts it is also simple enough to be used by individuals from different backgrounds and with different levels of trading skills. MT4 can also support the use of mobile devices.

All the information exchanged on the platform is encrypted with 128-bit keys, ensuring the security of the information being transferred. The system also has back up and restoration capabilities to guarantee that clients can continue to trade even if unforeseen mishaps occur.

The MetaTrader 4 platform is increasingly becoming a standard trading platform for Forex, CFDs and Futures. Over 300 brokerage companies and banks around the world use the MT4 platform for their core trading services and operations, serving millions of traders and investors globally. A significantly re-coded MetaTrader 5 is currently in public beta testing. MT5 has been designed as a platform for equity markets as well as Forex, CFD and Futures trading. The MT5 platform was officially released on 1 July 2010 but as some elements – most notably the equity features – are not yet fully operational, the MT4 platform is currently still the industry standard.
MetaTrader 4 is an innovative and highly flexible full-cycle trading platform that includes both back-office components and front-end terminals. Users can easily and efficiently manage traders’ groups, financial instruments, databases, data feeders etc.

The platform contains an Application Program Interface (MetaTrader 4 API) that makes it possible to extend its functionality and integration with other systems. It also has readymade plug-ins designed to facilitate various aspects of the platform operation.

MT4 can serve over 10,000 traders working with multiple accounts simultaneously. The server is capable of processing dozens of different financial instruments with quotes history going back many years.
