Plan Your Trade Before You Place It

Calculate position size, see modelled profit and loss, include costs, and compare your options. Free to use.

The planner at work on this page's example (EUR/USD, 10,000 USD, 1% risk, costs included): when the stop moves, the position size changes so the loss at the stop stays within $100.

Your setup

Gold, indices, crypto and futures have different contract rules and are not calculated here yet.

Assumptions
  • Your prices are chart/mid prices; a 0.8-pip spread is charged as a cost.
  • The stop fills 0.5 pips worse than its price; real fills can be worse (gaps, fast markets).
  • Position sized so the price move plus included costs fit the budget, then rounded down to the lot step.
  • Not included unless entered: swap beyond 0 night(s), conversion charges, taxes and platform or data fees.
  • Calculation version 1.0.0. How this is calculated

Drag the stop or target, or focus a handle and use the arrow keys (Shift for 10 pips). Neither can cross the entry. The form fields work too.

Compare three trade paths

Copy your setup into scenarios B and C and change only what you want to test. These are your own scenarios, not recommendations: no scenario is "better" without evidence about the market.

Add a scenario to see the comparison table.

Consecutive-loss scenario

What your balance would be after a run of losses at this stop and size, recalculated for every trade with your costs and lot step. A sequence you choose, not a probability or a forecast.

Risk per trade

After 10 modelled losses: 9,059.20 USD, a drawdown of 9.4%

Each loss risks the same percentage of the balance left, so positions shrink as the balance falls. Recalculated per trade with your costs and lot step.

Build my trading workflow

Research and scan, analyse, practise and test, plan, review. Tell us your market and how you work; the builder suggests software for the stages you need from documented capabilities, shows what you already cover, and lists known and unknown costs. TradersDNA's planner always fills the planning stage.

The workflow builder loads with the page's script.

Side-by-side comparisons

Pairs that traders often weigh against each other, written from documented differences.

What the planner does differently

Also available as focused tools: the forex lot size calculator and the forex profit calculator. Full formulas are in the methodology.

  • Costs inside the size

Spread, commission, slippage and swap are part of the budget check, not added afterwards, and the size is rounded down to your broker's lot step.

  • Hold the risk constant

Move the stop and the position resizes while your budget stays fixed; or hold the size and see the new risk.

  • Three trade paths

Compare your setup with a wider stop or higher costs; every figure comes from the same calculation.

  • Losing-streak check

See your balance after a run of losses you choose, at a fixed amount or a percentage of the current balance.

  • Your plan stays with you

Save it in this browser, copy it, download a CSV or print it. Nothing is sent to TradersDNA.

Example: why costs change the size

With a 10,000 USD account risking 1% (100 USD), a 30-pip EUR/USD stop, 0.5 pip of stop slippage and 7 USD commission per lot round turn: sizing on the price move alone gives 0.33 lots, whose modelled loss with costs is 102.96 USD, above the budget. Including the costs gives 0.32 lots and a modelled loss of 99.84 USD.

Questions

Is the modelled loss the most I can lose?

No. A stop order becomes a market order when it is triggered; in fast markets or over a weekend gap the fill can be worse than the stop price. Enter a slippage figure to model a worse fill. The result is a model under your assumptions, not a guarantee.

Where do the exchange rates come from?

When a conversion is needed, the European Central Bank's daily euro reference rates are used and their date is shown. They are reference rates, not prices you can trade; enter your own rate for precision. A missing rate is never assumed to be 1.

Is my data stored?

Your inputs stay in your browser. A plan is stored only when you press Save, and only in this browser. TradersDNA counts anonymous totals such as "calculations made", never balances, prices or notes.

Educational tools, not advice. The planner models outcomes under the assumptions you enter; real fills can be worse than modelled (gaps, slippage), and nothing here predicts results or recommends a trade. Software facts come from the vendors' own pages, checked on the dates shown; TradersDNA has not tested the products hands-on. Paid placements are always labelled and never change the Explorer's results. Product names and logos are trademarks of their owners, shown only to identify the products; no endorsement, sponsorship or partnership is implied.
