New analysis from Block Scholes finds that volatility in US equities has risen sharply following a technology-led sell-off, while Bitcoin remains relatively resilient around $80,000–$84,000. Ethereum, however, is showing greater sensitivity to market uncertainty.

US equity investors are showing heightened signs of nervousness following a sharp sell-off in artificial intelligence and semiconductor stocks, while Bitcoin has remained comparatively stable, according to new research from institutional cryptocurrency derivatives analytics firm.

In analysis published on 19 October 2026, Thahbib Rahman, Research Analyst at Block Scholes, reported that semiconductor stocks had fallen close to 20% over the preceding two weeks. The Nasdaq-100 also experienced its weakest weekly performance since the tariff-related market turmoil of April 2025, reflecting concerns about AI valuations and the broader economic environment.

The sell-off contributed to a rise in the Cboe Volatility Index (VIX), which measures expected volatility in the S&P 500 over the next 30 days. Meanwhile, Bitcoin continued trading within the $80,000–$84,000 range, showing relative resilience despite the deterioration in equity market sentiment.

AI Sell-Off Pushes Wall Street Volatility Higher

The recent decline in technology shares has increased uncertainty across US equity markets, particularly among companies closely associated with AI infrastructure and semiconductor demand.

According to Block Scholes, the VIX reached its highest level since the Federal Reserve’s July policy meeting, indicating rising expectations of market fluctuations. The increase followed a difficult week for technology stocks, with investors reassessing valuations and risks surrounding the AI investment cycle.

US market data confirmed the pressure on equities. The Nasdaq Composite fell 4.5% during the week ending 16 October, while the S&P 500 declined 1.9%, according to Associated Press reporting.

However, the volatility increase did not develop into a sustained rise during the following session. On 19 October, the VIX declined approximately 9.8% to 18.03 as US stocks rebounded, illustrating how quickly market sentiment can change.

Bitcoin Holds Steady While Ethereum Faces Greater Pressure

Bitcoin demonstrated comparatively stronger performance during the period of equity market weakness. Block Scholes reported that BTC remained within the $80,000–$84,000 trading range, recording a modest gain of approximately 1.5% over the preceding 30 days.

Ethereum showed a different pattern, declining nearly 8% over the same period. The contrast suggests that the two largest cryptocurrencies were responding differently to the prevailing macroeconomic uncertainty.

Figures reflect the research firm’s reported market observations and are not live quotes. The figures show relative differences in performance and expected volatility, rather than an absence of risk in cryptocurrency markets. Bitcoin remains a volatile asset, and its stronger recent performance does not guarantee similar behaviour during future equity market declines.

Options Markets Reveal Different Levels of Risk Expectations

The analysis also examined implied volatility, a measure derived from options prices that reflects market expectations of future price movements.

According to Block Scholes, Bitcoin’s seven-day implied volatility increased modestly from just below 30% to 33% between the previous Friday and 19 October. Ethereum’s implied volatility rose more sharply, increasing by nearly 10 percentage points over the same period.

Historically, Bitcoin’s implied volatility has averaged nearly three times that of the S&P 500 since 2021, according to the research firm. However, the recent rise in equity volatility reduced that ratio to less than two, highlighting the unusually elevated level of nervousness in traditional stock markets relative to Bitcoin’s own historical relationship with equities.

Block Scholes also observed widening put-call skew in cryptocurrency options. Ethereum’s seven-day put options traded at premiums of up to eight volatility points over comparable calls during the weekend, suggesting increased demand for downside protection.

These developments indicate that cryptocurrency traders were still preparing for potential market declines, even as Bitcoin’s spot price remained relatively stable.

What the Divergence Means for Traders

The contrast between equity volatility and cryptocurrency performance raises questions about how investors are responding to changing economic conditions.

Technology shares have faced pressure from concerns surrounding AI investment, valuations and financing costs, while Bitcoin’s recent price stability has suggested a different short-term response to the same environment. Ethereum’s weaker performance, however, demonstrates that cryptocurrency markets are not moving uniformly.

For traders, the combination of implied volatility, put-call skew and cross-asset performance offers insight into how different markets are pricing potential risks.

Block Scholes’ research suggests that Bitcoin options traders were showing comparatively less nervousness than equity investors during the period examined, although increased demand for protective puts indicates that downside risks remain.

The distinction is important: a lower relative volatility reading does not necessarily mean Bitcoin is safer than equities. It indicates that expectations of future price fluctuations have changed relative to their previous relationship.

As corporate earnings, geopolitical developments and monetary policy expectations continue to influence financial markets, traders will be watching whether Bitcoin maintains its relative resilience or moves more closely with broader risk assets.
